>> Ellipsoidals
Ellipsoidals are most often used for front of house (FOH) and special lighting (Specials). They are fixed focus spotlights that produce a round, hard edged beam of light. They have ellipsoidal shaped reflectors, lenses of various focal lengths, and shutters that can shape the beam of light. Ellipsoidals can be hard-focused for pattern or gobo projection.
Followspots are manually operated to follow a performer on stage and produce a hard or soft edged beam of light. Most are equipped with a color changer, iris and dowser. Throws can range from twenty feet to hundreds of feet.
Fresnels produce a round, soft edged beam of light that can be focused from "Spot" to "Flood". Generally they have a shorter throw than ellipsoidals and are most often used onstage for front, back, side or down lighting.
